1956 - 1960 OJ Leavers Afternoon Visit To St John's

Sunny skies greeted a small group of 1956-1960’s OJs when they returned to St John’s for the afternoon on Wednesday 21 September.  Meeting in reception they proceeded to the Dining Hall for School lunch where they were joined by the Chaplain, The Revd Sarah Bryant and two of our current foundationers.

Foundation Funds Fives!

Generous donations to the St John's Foundation have enabled the School to refurbish the Fives Courts over the summer holidays, ready for the start of the Autumn term.

The Fives Courts were built in 1908 in memory of Charles Churchill, Chairman of the Governing Council and a key supporter of St John's.  They were one of the first developments on the School site after the main School buildings.  Having never been refurbished in over a century, they were falling into disrepair and were beginning to become unusable.

Thanks to generous gifts made by OJs, Parents, Friends of the School and current and former staff the Fives Courts have now been fully refurbished and are ready for another several decades use by future generations of pupils at St John's.

The Hon Sir Anthony Bruce Ewbank

We have been informed of the sad news of the passing of The Hon Sir Anthony Bruce Ewank (North 1938 - 1943)  on 25 June 2011.  He left St Johns to study at Trinity College, Cambridge and then taught Maths at Stamford School, Lincolnshire.  Later he went on to take up Law and finished up as a High Court Judge on the Family Court Bench.  He was a great supporter of the School and OJs are welcome to attend his funeral which is at 12 noon on Wednesday 13th July at St Thomas Church, Goring-on-Thames.

OJ Sunday

Over 300 OJs, Guests, Friends of St John's and former and current members of Staff gathered on the Quad for OJ Sunday on 3 July.  The focus this year was Sports and many OJs v pupil matches were played on the School fields during the afternoon activities.

The day began with a Chapel Service at which OJ, Canon Peter Bruinvels (Sy'69) preached and was followed by reception drinks and BBQ outside the dining hall under the sunny summer sky.  At 2pm the matches commenced with  matches in Rugby, Netball, Fives and Cricket and golf and shooting competitions were held on the Quad and Rifle Range.

Mission to Malawi

A charity set up in memory of a young OJ and Army Doctor is helping to improve healthcare in Sub-Saharan Africa as well as providing bursaries for St John’s pupils volunteering in Africa.
Alex Coutselos (Surrey, 2001) became an Army medic and Paratrooper whilst studying medicine at Nottingham university but died suddenly in 2006, aged 23. Alex had worked extensively in Africa and his love of the continent and passion for humanitarian work inspired his mother, Ruth Markus, to set up The AMECA Trust after his death.

Special Offer for OJs!

Thanks to Nick Thurlow (South, 1979) OJs have been offered a special discount from Tyre Club, a specialist insurance service for car tyres.

By using code TD0511 OJs can claim up to £175 discount on membership, meaning six tyres can be insured for as little as £2.78 a month.  The St John's Foundation will also receive £10 for every OJ who signs up using the special code.

Runs and Recognition for Cricketers

The start of the cricket season has seen St John's pick up a prestigious sportsmanship award and an OJ score an impressive 168 against Derbyshire.

OJs, Simon Barrett (pictured right) and Sam Burge, opened the batting for Leeds/Bradford MCCU against Derbyshire at Derby.  Simon scored his 168 in the three day match which ended as a draw.  Leeds/Bradford MCCU is one of six MCC Universities where cricketers can play top class cricket without compromising their education.  Current England captain Andrew Strauss is a graduate of this scheme.
